Design FAQs (9)

How long will it take to complete a project for me?

This depends on many factors, including the size of the project and the amount of other projects I am working on. However, the general time scale is between 2 weeks to 2 months.

How much do you charge?

We wish there is a straight answer to this, however design services are not so easily quantifiable as requirement varies for each and every project.

We have two types of billing depending on your design job :
a) Net Price – per-project price, pre-determined at the start of the project or
b) Hourly rated – billed according to the time utilised.
Clients are updated regularly on their project by our time-log and status reports.

We offer a FREE, no-obligation quotation process, to help define the scope and specification of each project. We are flexible and can work within any budget constraints you may have.
We do not believe in disappointing anybody with any form of hidden cost. It is our policy to be transparent with our clients with all costs itemized prior to the start of any project. Any changes and adjustments are then made and agreed upon by both sides before embarking on any work.

What types of payment do you accept?

Vividea Design offers flexible payment options. For your convenience, we accept the following forms of payment:

All major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover)

Checks / Cheques, money orders, or cashier’s checks

We also offer flexible payment plans, including deferred monthly payments and retainer plans.

Do you offer printing services?

Yes, we can offer a complete service from design concept right thru to final commercial printing. It is during the initial consultation phase that the scope of the work to be completed is quoted – including printing if the client requests this service.
We can also provide print ready files to your selected commercial printer.

How can I protect my business name?

Generally, businesses, including corporations, protect their trade names by registering their trade name as a service mark or trademark if the trade name also functions as a service mark or trademark. Dending on your country/state of origin, different laws govern the protection of your business name. Because of the legal complexities involved, we recommend that businesses obtain private counsel to get advice on how to protect a trade name in interstate commerce.

Can you produce a style guide or brand guidelines document for other designers to follow?

Yes, if we are creating a logo and visual identity for you we recommend producing a brand guidelines document. This illustrates to other designers and graphic professionals the importance of maintaining a consistent brand image for your company through careful use of the logo, typefaces, colours and placement of elements on a page. A document such as this often covers do’s and don’ts and provides an incredibly helpful resource to others. It also demonstrates a level of professionalism within your company that marketing and brand image is an important asset you maintain and protect.

Will you give me the digital files of my designs or do I need to ask you every time I need changes?

Every time you need updates or changes to your designs, we expect you to ask us so we can ensure consistency across all your marketing material.

Logotypes
All logotypes are given to you on a CD in the following formats: EPS (this is an editable format), PDF and JPG.
Those formats can be used in-house or by your other service providers such as sign writers; printers; web developers etc.
Graphic Design for printed media, i.e.: brochures, flyers
If requested, we can give you a copy of the artwork in PDF format. If you require updates we will make the changes for you to ensure brand consistency.
Graphic design for web
For all web projects we can work in collaboration with web developers. All files are given to the web developer according to their specifications: Photoshop layered files or GIF, PNG or JPG images. Future changes to native files can be made by us or by your web developer.

If I commission a design project who owns the copyright and intellectual property rights?

Unlike some other agencies we do not charge high release fees for our work, if work is completed at our standard rates of pay and intellectual property is requested before we start the project then on receipt of final payment we release all intellectual property rights on the design. We reserve the right to feature the work in our portfolio and our own self promotional material and that if our work is featured elsewhere such as within the scope of a another design or artwork we would expect to be credited.

Can you create files I can edit and print with my computer?

Yes, we can accomodate most popular design software packages. Just let us know what software you use and we can format your files into a form that is editable with your software.

Product Design (5)

What types of products do you design?

Vividea Design and Research’s team are highly trained in almost every area of product and industrial design and can turn these skills to any form of physical design. To date Vividea has completed design in areas including highly conceptual packaging and wearable technology through to heavily engineered mass produced components in plastics and metals as well as making the most of cutting edge rapid manufacturing techniques. We specialise in the design of concepts where ergonomics and anatomy are key; as well as consumer and safety products.

Should we try to develop completely new products, or to improve existing ones?

In practice, most new products are improvements on existing products. Although improving an existing product might seem to have less potential than developing a completely new product, it is often enough to give you a competitive edge in a proven market.

Improving existing products is generally easier and less risky than developing completely new ideas. You are likely to have a better understanding of the technologies involved and customer preferences for that kind of product. The development process is usually less complex, requires less investment and can be completed more quickly. That said, if you manage to successfully develop and protect a ground-breaking innovation – something that really is a first – the rewards can be huge.

Why do I need to prototype?

Modern CAD software is very sophisticated. Not only can you do the design, it can tell you what the stresses and strains will be on the design, what the thermal affects will be and calculate fluid flows (liquid and gas); but what it does not do is tell you what the design will do in real life. Prototyping is an essential stage in any design project. It will show how the design will react when used in a real world environment, it will show weaknesses in the manufacturability of the design, it will give feed back from customers and suppliers alike about the acceptability of the design.

James Dyson went through 2000 prototypes before he got his vacuum cleaner design fit for market; this is exceptional, however prototyping is an iterative process, it is unlikely the first prototype will be ‘fit for purpose’.

Major car and Aerospace manufacturers use CAD software a magnitude (or two) more expensive than software used by Fripp Design and Research, but they always prototype…at the end of the day, would you get into a plane that went straight from CAD to manufacture?

Is it worth creating a prototype?

It can be very helpful to have a working prototype. You can use a prototype to check that a new design works mechanically. You can also use a prototype to assess customer reaction to the look and feel of a product.

It may be worth going through more than one prototyping stage. For example, you could use a sketch at an early stage to gauge initial reactions to an outline design before investing heavily in developing it. If you are improving a product, you might produce models that demonstrate the improvements rather than a full prototype.

What will I get?

What you receive will depend upon the individual requirements of the project and will be detailed in a project proposal which Vividea will prepare prior to the commencement of the project. Concept development will result in visuals consisting of hand sketching, research boards and possibly some basic CAD. CAD Realisation will result in the production of CAD files made available in the most appropriate form for any follow-on processes. Animation may also be used where appropriate alongside photorealistic renders for design approval. Physical prototypes will be produced as dictated by the project requirements.

3D Rendering (3)

What is 3D rendering?

3D rendering is the process of automatically converting 3D wire frame models into 2D images with 3D photorealistic effects or non-photorealistic rendering with the aid of computer and software.

What is the process behind 3D rendering?

3D rendering is completed in three generalised steps.

Step 1 – Floorplans are collected and 3D modelling is done
Step 2 – All 3D models are textured (photorealistic surfaces are applied)
Step 3 – The image is “rendered” (the entire 3D space is flattened into a 2D image)

The completed imagery is then given to the client.

Can you render nontraditional packaging such as bottles and cans?

Through our digital imaging services, we have created incredibly realistic renderings of a variety of “out of the box” packages, including cans, bottles and CDs. If the artwork exists, we can render it.
